Steel fire protection: HENSOTHERM® 2K coating systems for fast-track data centre projects

When constructing large data centres, short project schedules, prefabricated components and precisely coordinated construction processes are crucial. HENSOTHERM® 920 KS and HENSOTHERM® 921 KS are specifically suited to the workshop coating of structural steelwork and therefore support industrial prefabrication away from the construction site.

The solvent-free 2K fire protection systems with 100% solids by volume allow high film thicknesses per coat and fast drying. Depending on the required dry film thickness, system build-up and ambient conditions, coated steel components may be ready for transport or application of the top coat as early as the following day. The chemically crosslinked coating provides high mechanical resistance and reduces the risk of damage during loading, transport and installation. Corrosion protection up to corrosivity category C5 very high in accordance with DIN EN ISO 12944 also allows coordinated system build-ups for technical buildings, energy centres, cooling facilities and other demanding areas of a data centre.

This allows coating work to be transferred from the construction site to the controlled workshop environment, processes to be carried out in parallel and coated steel components to be delivered ready for installation – a significant advantage for modular and time-critical data centre projects.

Concrete Fire Protection: HENSOTHERM® and HENSOMASTIK® Coating Systems

Upgrade concrete structures in conversions and brownfield data centres without increasing cross-sections
In many cases, concrete components achieve the required fire resistance through their structural design alone. However, where the component thickness or reinforcement position is insufficient, HENSOTHERM® 820 KS and HENSOMASTIK® B 3000 provide thin-film solutions for upgrading the fire resistance of floors, beams and columns.

The systems are particularly suitable for existing buildings, changes of use, construction deviations and deliberately optimised precast and prestressed concrete structures. They require very little additional construction depth and, depending on the component and system, can provide fire resistance periods of up to 240 minutes.

Certified Fire Stopping Systems for Penetrations

Fire stopping: maintaining fire compartmentation despite high service densities

In data centres, numerous power, data, control and cooling services penetrate fire-resisting walls and floors between data halls, network, electrical, UPS, battery and technical areas. Every opening must be sealed so that the required fire resistance of the building element is restored.

HENSOTHERM® and HENSOMASTIK® fire stopping systems tested in accordance with DIN EN 1366-3 and classified in accordance with DIN EN 13501-2, with European Technical Assessments as well as national verification of usability and applicability, provide tested solutions for single-service penetrations and large mixed penetration seals – from individual cables and electrical conduits to cable trays and combustible, non-combustible and insulated cooling and service pipes.

Pre-assembled Service Transits, flexible pipe collars, re-penetrable mixed penetration soft seals and robust mortar seals enable planning to be adapted to the respective construction and fit-out phase. Reserve openings can be closed at an early stage and subsequently populated during later fit-out phases within the permissible system limits.

Overview Penetrations Seals

HENSOTHERM® and HENSOMASTIK® fire stopping systems

A penetration seal made from non-combustible materials can, in combination with intumescent materials, form an insulating barrier against heat and oxygen ingress and re-close openings in the building element left by combustible pipes or insulation that have burnt away.

C-FORM – BIM-Planned Fire Protection Recess for Fast and Coordinated Construction Processes

In fast-track data centre projects, numerous service penetrations must be planned at an early stage, coordinated across different trades and prepared for subsequent fit-out phases. C-FORM combines a precisely manufactured permanent formwork element produced by 3D concrete printing with an integrated HENSOMASTIK® fire stopping system.

The elements can already be assigned to specific openings, fire compartments and service types in the BIM model, manufactured on a project-specific basis and installed when the wall or floor slab is cast. This eliminates conventional formwork removal while defining the opening dimensions and fire stopping system during the structural construction phase.

Standardised C-FORM elements for cable trays, cooling pipes, mixed MEP services and reserve openings support repetitive construction processes and the phased fit-out of large data centres. Defining the fire stopping system at an early stage reduces interface risks, facilitates compliance with permissible distances and provides a reliable basis for execution, acceptance and digital as-built documentation.

Certified Fire Protection Systems for Fire-Resistant Joints

Fire protection for joints: maintaining fire compartmentation down to the last joint

Fire-resisting walls and floors can only fulfil their protective function if the joints and connections between the building elements are also properly sealed. Large data centres contain numerous linear joints, for example between lightweight partition walls and concrete floors, between solid building elements or at interfaces with the structural steelwork.

HENSOMASTIK® Acrylic provides tested fire protection solutions for horizontal and vertical wall, floor and ceiling joints as well as for different connections between solid, lightweight, steel and timber construction elements. Depending on the configuration, fire resistance classifications up to EI 120 and joint widths of up to 400 mm can be achieved.

The BIM planning template for Autodesk Revit makes it possible to select, position and dimension classified joint solutions directly in the building model. Integrated parameters and warnings support compliance with permissible joint widths, while prepared quantity take-offs facilitate specification, costing and material planning.

Additional testing for air permeability and sound insulation makes HENSOMASTIK® Acrylic particularly attractive for technically demanding data halls, network, energy and plant areas.
