Kraanspoor, Amsterdam (NL)

The Kraanspoor is located in Amsterdam-Noord on an island in the River Ij on the site of what was once the largest shipyard in Europe, the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (NDSM). An office building designed on the initiative of OTH Architecten, which was built on a disused, historic concrete crane track on the site of the NDSM shipyard for preservation and conversion.

The three-storey building, an elevated steel and glass office block measuring an impressive 270 metres long, 13 metres high above the water surface and 8.50 metres wide, is known for its transparent, lightweight construction, which gives it a floating appearance. It is a great example of adaptive reuse, combining industrial heritage with modern architecture. Kraanspoor, or Kranspur, has struck a chord with the times and all office space was let before completion in 2007.

Protected with HENSOTHERM® 920 KS
The HENSOTHERM® 920 KS 2C fire protection system protects the steel structure of the external stud frame. The system consisting of the primer HENSOGRUND 2K EP, the 2K intumescent HENSOTHERM® 920 KS and the topcoat HENSOTOP 2K PU was applied directly on site. The selected system structure achieves the prescribed fire resistance time of R 90 and the required corrosivity category C5 for the office building located on the waterfront.

HENSOTHERM® 2C fire protection systems are ideally applied in the workshop so that steel structures can be transported directly from there to the construction site after a drying time of just 24 hours, optimally protected against mechanical loads and the effects of the weather. In the Kraanspoor project, the existing coating on the outside had been damaged by the weather and was therefore no longer safe and had to be completely renewed. For this purpose, the building was enclosed in the open area so that the old coating on the steel girder construction could be completely removed in advance by blasting with a surface preparation level of 2.5. The 2K fire protection system HENSOTHERM® 920 KS was then applied as described above.

HENSOTHERM® 920 KS is a two-pack (2C) solvent-free fi re protection coating for protecting indoor and outdoor steel sections and steel structures. HENSOTHERM® 920 KS impresses with its fire resistance rates up to R 30 / R 60 / R 90 / R 120 minutes, its working properties such as its optimal pot life, its thin layer thicknesses, its max achievable corrosivity category up to ≤ C5 very high in the system. HENSOTHERM® 920 KS is the first 2C fire protection system, with and without topcoat, that can therefore be used for more than 25 years in accordance with the current ETA, provided it is used properly in accordance with our manufacturer’s instructions.
