Self-storage in Dresden | Fire protection for steel and concrete
The premises of the former Oswald Enterlein coloured and luxury paper factory in Dresden-Niedersedlitz, which from the 19th century produced not only candy papers but also bobbins with fine papers for the manufacture of cigarettes and the silver foil for the corresponding boxes, were home to a print shop until the end.
The old existing building has now been converted into a self-storage facility where private and business customers will soon be able to store their belongings flexibly and cheaply in rented storage boxes/rooms.
In order to fulfil the required fire resistance rate R 90 of the existing steel & cast iron columns and concrete ceilings after the renovation of the building, the decision was made in favour of the water- based fire protection systems HENSOTHERM® 421 KS and HENSOTHERM® 820 KS for upgrading.
Fire protection for steel
Before the steel fire protection system was applied to approx. 1,000 m², the old paint had to be removed from the cast iron supports and steel structures by blasting to surface preparation grade Sa 2.5 and then coated with HENSOGRUND 1K AK corrosion protection. To ensure the best possible surface quality on the cast iron columns and steel rivets, the steel fire protection coating HENSOTHERM® 421 KS was then applied using the airless spraying method. Finally, the solvent-based topcoat HENSOTOP SB was applied to protect the fire protection coating from moisture and exposure to environmental influences and cleaning.
HENSOTHERM® 421 KS – the complete steel fire protection system for ecological construction
HENSOTHERM® 421 KS is a Green Product from Hensel and it is free from halogens, APEO, borates, plasticisers and silicones. The fire protection coating is AgBB-tested, fulfils VOC emission class A+, is LEED v4 certified, has an Environmental Product Declaration EPD-RHG20190097-IAC1-DE and is registered in the DGNB Navigator 3E4MHK. Furthermore, the product is very well suited for Minergie-(A-/P-)Eco corresponds to 1st priority Eco-BKP.
All components, such as the primer HENSOGRUND WB Green, the intumescent coating and the topcoat HENSOTOP WB Green of the steel fire protection system HENSOTHERM® 421 KS are now available in the Green Product Line.

Fire protection for concrete
Before the concrete fire protection system was applied to approx. 8,000 m², the old coatings had to be removed from the concrete surfaces by means of blasting and then after completely dried primed with BETON-CARBONSPERRE to protect against the penetration of pollutants and water. The HENSOTHERM® 820 KS concrete fire protection coating was then applied using the airless spraying method.
Patented concrete fire protection with HENSOTHERM® 820 KS
In order to improve the fire resistance time of concrete components due to a lack of reinforcement cover after the renovation of historic buildings, these can be retrofitted with the water-based fire protection system HENSOTHERM® 820 KS (European Patent No. EP 2686391 B1) to the required fire resistance class up to R 240.
In the event of fire, HENSOTHERM® 820 KS forms a heat-insulating layer of carbon foam and thus prevents the concrete components from heating up and the concrete from spalling off the steel reinforcement.
