HENSOTHERM® 980 KS | High-performance 2K fire protection for rail vehicles
HENSOTHERM® 980 KS is a solvent-free, two-component (2K) fire protection coating for mechanically and climatically demanding interior and exterior applications on rail vehicles. The robust coating system has been specially developed for components where fire protection needs to be combined with high levels of mechanical resistance and durability under climatic and environmental exposure. The system has been tested in accordance with ISO 5658-2, ISO 5659-2 and ISO 5660-1 and meets the requirements of R1/R7-HL3 in accordance with DIN EN 45545-2.
Thanks to its high mechanical resistance, rapid drying and excellent application properties, HENSOTHERM® 980 KS is particularly suitable for industrial series production and workshop coating applications.
The robust coating withstands the stresses encountered during transport, installation and service. When used as part of a system with a suitable primer and top coat, corrosion protection requirements up to corrosivity category C5 very high in accordance with DIN EN ISO 12944 can be achieved on steel components.
Due to their low stiffness, thin-gauge metal sheets can be prone to vibration, resonance and disruptive drumming noise. Once cured, HENSOTHERM® 980 KS forms a highly adherent, mechanically robust coating that increases the inherent damping of the component, thereby reducing vibrations and the resulting resonance noise. In the event of fire, the coating intumesces to form a thermally insulating foam layer that reduces heat transfer to the substrate.
HENSOTHERM® 980 KS thus combines high-performance fire protection, corrosion protection, mechanical protection and acoustic damping in an economical, low-VOC 2K coating system.
Key applications and typical areas of use

Customised surface finish as part of the system
HENSOTHERM® 980 KS is suitable for use on appropriate steel and aluminium substrates and, depending on the substrate, application and corrosion protection requirements, can be combined with compatible primers and top coats. This allows fire protection, mechanical resistance, corrosion protection and customised surface finishing to be combined within one coating system.
Mechanically resistant 2K top coats are available in RAL colours, DB shades or matched to an individual colour sample. For third-party primers or top coats, as well as application over existing coatings, project-specific technical consultation is required.
European standards for fire protection in rail vehicles
HENSOTHERM® 980 KS meets the requirements of DIN EN 45545-2 for R1/R7-HL3. The classification is based on testing in accordance with ISO 5658-2, ISO 5659-2 and ISO 5660-1.
ISO 5658-2: Test for lateral flame spread. The lateral spread of flames across a vertically oriented material surface under defined heat exposure is assessed.
ISO 5659-2: Determination of optical smoke density. The reduction in light transmission caused by smoke generation under defined test conditions is assessed.
ISO 5660-1: Determination of the heat release rate using a cone calorimeter. The heat released by a material under defined heat exposure is assessed.
The material meets the requirements of the highest hazard level, Hazard Level 3 (HL3), for requirement sets R1 and R7, making it suitable for corresponding applications on rail vehicles subject to particularly stringent fire safety requirements for operating on underground sections and in tunnels.
