A fire protection coating is a specially formulated coating designed to protect structural elements from high temperatures during a fire, thereby preserving their functionality and load-bearing capacity for a longer period. Fire protection coatings play a vital role in passive fire protection, helping to safeguard lives, protect valuable assets and slow the spread of fire.
A fire protection coating is specifically engineered to enhance the fire resistance of a substrate or structural element. The most widely used systems are intumescent fire protection coatings, which expand when exposed to heat and form an insulating char layer that protects the underlying material from rapid temperature rise.
However, there are also fire protection coatings that function through ablation. In the event of a fire, these systems undergo a chemical reaction that releases chemically bound water, absorbing heat and reducing the thermal impact on the protected substrate. This process helps delay temperature increase and enhances fire performance.
The resulting protective layer reduces heat transfer to the substrate and delays the point at which critical temperatures are reached. As a result, the structural stability of the element is maintained for longer, providing valuable additional time for evacuation, firefighting operations and emergency response.
