Telegraphenamt | Berlin-Mitte

In November 2022, the Telegraphenamt opened in Berlin-Mitte between Oranienburger Straße and the Bode Museum. The lavishly restored, historic building combines hotel, restaurant, bar, event areas, a private members club – and is a meeting place for locals and globals.

The history of the house
The Telegraphenamt stands for substance instead of hype, personality instead of mass and communication as a central element. This is no coincidence, but is in the DNA of the house: In the last century, where people from all over the world meet today, was Berlin’s communicative hub: in 1910, the construction of the main telegraph office, one of the most modern of its time, began. In the basement of the building was one of the largest pneumatic tube systems in Europe. In recent years, the listed building has been extensively restored and modernized. The newly opened Telegraphenamt would like to enrich the neighbourhood around Hackesche Höfe, Auguststraße and Torstraße with its diverse range of culture, scene and gastronomy.

Arriving at the Telegraphenamt
In the Telegraphenamt, you don’t just sleep or eat, you live. Even the spacious driveway opposite the Monbijoupark is impressive. Instead of the classic lobby, guests are greeted by an open-plan room with plants, comfortable benches and the original pneumatic tube system. As was the case more than 100 years ago, this is where the hotel’s communicative hub is located. The atmosphere is open and lively.

Feel good in a historic ambience
The hotel has 97 rooms and maisonettes (between 21 and 140 square meters) as retreats in the metropolis. The design of the interiors is influenced by the Berlin of the 1920s, the history of the house and the current attitude to life of the city. The original building elements such as the historic columns, capped ceilings in the rooms and the exposed brick walls have been integrated into the modern interior design. The special view of Berlin can be enjoyed from the rooms facing Monbijoupark: with views of the TV Tower, Berlin Cathedral and the Red Town Hall.

Revitalization with HENSOTHERM® 421 KS
In order to be able to use the rooms of the building in the long term and sustainably, the steel structures had to be converted into a protection period of 90 minutes (F/R 90) according to the specifications of the building authority with a fire protection system, fire protection panels or fire protection coating. In order to preserve the historical character and its mix of styles of steel constructions, brick and glass, the water-based steel fire protection system HENSOTHERM® 421 KS was chosen to upgrade the steel. In the first step, the cast iron and steel columns, as well as the steel girders, had to be freed from the old paints by means of blasting and then provided with the corrosion protection HENSOGRUND 2K EP. In order to ensure the best possible surface quality on the capitals, cast columns and girders with steel rivets, the application of the intumescent coating HENSOTHERM® 421 KS was carried out using an airless spraying process. Subsequently, the fire protection coating on the steel structures, the historic columns, the steel girders and visible steel surfaces in the cap ceilings was not only protected against moisture and environmental influences with the HENSOTOP SB coating varnish in the colour DB 703, but also accentuated and thus
integrated into the modern interior design.

With immediate effect, all components (primer HENSOGRUND WB Green, insulation layer former, top coat HENSOTOP WB Green) of the fire protection system for steel HENSOTHERM® 421 KS are available in our Green Product line.
