EDGE Südkreuz Berlin | Vattenfall german headquarters

In August 2022, about 1600 Vattenfall employees relocated to EDGE Südkreuz Berlin, the new German headquarters of this European energy company, that is now home to its originally five Berlin locations.
The fruit of exemplary sustainable planning, this office district was awarded DGNB Platinum. It is currently the largest timber-hybrid, and so carbon-friendly complex in Germany, divided into two buildings covering a total of 29,000 square metres of commercial floor space.

At the heart of this complex is the spacious atrium in the Carré, with ascending treelike staircases and aerial platforms ideal for spontaneous meetings between employees.

Protected with HENSOTHERM® fire-protection system for steel
The underlying steel structures of the timber-clad columns bearing the treelike staircases and platforms were upgraded to the stipulated fire resistance class with the water based fire protection system HENSOTHERM® 421 KS. According to its general type approval aBG Z-19.51-2349, this fire protection system is also suitable for tie rods (hollow round tubes and solid bars) and so was applied to upgrade the tension members in the atrium roof as well.

The system used is made up of an anticorrosive in the form of the water-based primer HENSOGRUND WB Green, the fire protection system for steel HENSOTHERM® 421 KS, and the two-pack top coat HENSOTOP 2K PU.

Further details on Vattenfall’s new German headquarters at Berlin Südkreuz station can be viewed on the company website at www.vattenfall.de.

The fire protection coating for steel
HENSOTHERM® 421 KS is a solvent based, single component (1C) fire protection coating for upgrading steel sections and steel structures in indoor areas, open buildings, and outdoor areas shielded against driving rain and condensation. HENSOTHERM® 421 KS (ETA 20/1228, aBG Z-19.51-2313, VKF 27733) presents a convincing combination of ultra thin coating thicknesses, short drying times, and high cost effectiveness. Based on the primer HENSOGRUND, the insulation layer former HENSOTHERM® 421 KS, and the top coat HENSOTOP, this fire protection system is maintenance free and has a verified service life of at least 25 years – and this even without the (albeit recommended) top coat.

With a fire resistance time of R 30–R 180, the fire protection system HENSOTHERM® 421 KS is suitable for the following applications on steel structures: standard sections R30/60/90/120, tension members e.g. in trusses R30/60/90/120, and tie rods (hollow round tubes and solid bars) R30/60.

The end-to-end fire protection system for ecological steel structures
HENSOTHERM® 421 KS is a Hensel Green Product, free of halogens, APEO, borates, plasticisers, and silicones. This fire protection coating is AgBB-tested and LEED v4 confirmed, fulfils VOC emission class A+, and has been awarded the Environmental Product Declaration EPD-RHG20190097-IAC1-DE and registered under 3E4MHK in the DGNB Navigator. In addition, the product complies fully with Minergie (A/P) Eco criteria, corresponding to Priority 1 Eco-BKP.

With immediate effect, all components (primer HENSOGRUND WB Green, insulation layer former, top coat HENSOTOP WB Green) of the fire protection system for steel HENSOTHERM® 421 KS are available in our Green Product line.
