Extension of the UL-approval for HENSOTHERM® 490 KS

Water-based fire-protection coatings have been one of our development and production priorities for decades. Our sound knowledge in this specialist field recently led to the approval for our HENSOTHERM® 490 KS being extended. This coating system makes Hensel the only German manufacturer to offer a fire-protection coating for steel which is tested and approved in accordance with the specifications of the UL 263 standard. HENSOTHERM® 490 KS with its water-based formulation is a further coating system in our Green Product line, which combines those Hensel products which are recommended as construction products for sustainable building by virtue of their emission certificates.

UL, or Underwriters Laboratories, have been testing and certifying products, components, materials and systems since 1894. UL demands that the quality standard of the products determined on certification is verified on a regular basis. Hensel uses UL‘s external monitoring to provide verification.

In addition to the previous values for open and closed supports, the approval now also applies to various sections in the form of beams. A distinction is made here between installation situations in which the surrounding structure is able to take up the thermal expansion of the beams (restrained) and those where this is not possible (unrestrained). In the first case, beams with a Hp/A value of up to 253 m-1 which are coated with HENSOTHERM® 490 KS are able to guarantee a fire-resistance time of 3.5 hours, while those with a Hp/A value of up to 77 m-1 can provide protection for up to 4 hours. At locations where the thermal expansion cannot be restrained, sections with a HP/A value of up to 253 m-1 are protected for 2.5 hours and those with a U/A value of up to 156 m-1 for 3 hours against the loss of their structural load-bearing capacity.

The approval provides for the use of HENSOTHERM® 490 KS in interior spaces in general, but also in air-conditioned interior spaces, without the application of a top coat. This means savings in time and material.

Our HENSOTHERM® and HENSOMASTIK® fire-protection products are developed and produced exclusively at our company base in Börnsen near Hamburg and therefore bear the “Made in Germany” certification mark in accordance with TÜV Nord Cert Standard A75-5018.
