LEED classification as ecological building material

The protection of our environment and the conservation of its resources are of overriding concern at Hensel when we develop and manufacture our products.

Fire-protection coatings manufactured by Rudolf Hensel GmbH were recently classified as construction material for ecological construction according to the criteria of the US LEED seal of quality. Very good news for those who commission building work and for construction companies, since the specifications for the compatibility of building materials with humans and the environment are particularly high especially when used in hospitals, schools and nursery schools.

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. This seal of quality was created in 1998 by the U.S. Green Building Council and lays down strict criteria for the construction products presented.

The products certified include the HENSOTHERM® 410 KS and HENSOTHERM® 420 KS fire- protection systems for steel, which have been approved in accordance with the European standard for R30/R60 and R90/R120. These systems comprise the HENSOGRUND AQ primer, the HENSOTHERM® 410 KS and 420 KS intumescent fire-protection coatings, and the HENSOTOP 84 AQ top coat in the desired colour. All system components have a water-based formulation.

The transparent HENSOTHERM 1 KS INNEN fire-protection system for interior use on wood has been approved as ecological construction material in accordance with LEED criteria as well. The VOC content of the HENSOTHERM 1 KS INNEN fire-protection coating is less than one percent, the associated protective paint contains no aromatic hydrocarbons.

HENSOMASTIK® 5 KS and HENSOMASTIK® B 3000 were certified as well. HENSOMASTIK® 5 KS contains no solvents or halogens, and is weatherproof, too. It can therefore be used outdoors as well for the fire-protection of cables, cable bandages and for penetration sealing. HENSOMASTIK® B 3000 is used for uprating concrete structural members.
