Fire-protection coatings for ecological construction
The development work at Rudolf Hensel GmbH focuses on the environmental compatibility and sustainability of the HENSOTHERM® and HENSOMASTIK® coating products for use in passive constructional fire protection.
Hensel’s Green Product line incorporates all its non-VOC fire-protection products which have qualified as building materials for ecological construction by virtue of the fact that their percentage of volatile organic compounds (VOC) is below the detection limit. These products thus fulfil the requirements in the 10/2010 DIBt reports on “Zulassungsgrundsätzen zur gesundheitlichen Bewertung von Bauprodukten in Innenräumen” (“Approval principles for the health-related evaluation of building products in indoor spaces”) in conjunction with the LCI values issued by the AgBB (Committee for the health-related evaluation of building products). They are thus also recommended for use in public buildings that must comply with the assessment criteria contained in “Nachhaltiges Bauen für Bundesgebäude” (Guidelines for sustainable building) issued by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building, and Urban Development.
The products certified include the HENSOTHERM® 410 KS, HENSOTHERM® 420 KS and HENSOTHERM® 421 KS fire-protection systems for steel, approved in accordance with European standard EN 13501-2 primarily for R30/R60, R90/R120 and R30/R180 applications, as well as HENSOTHERM® 460 KS and HENSOTHERM® 470 KS, tested and approved in accordance with the British Standard (BS 476). Each of these systems comprises the HENSOGRUND AQ primer, the HENSOTHERM® intumescent fire-protection coating and the HENSOTOP AQ / HENSOTOP WB top coat in the desired colour. All system components have a water-based formulation and are thus particularly friendly to the environment. Also certified were HENSOMASTIK® 5 KS FARBE, which is used for penetration sealing and fire protection for cables, inside as well as outside; the HENSOTHERM® 1 KS INNEN transparent fire-protection system for wood; HENSOMASTIK® B 3000 and HENSOTHERM® 820 KS for the fire protection of concrete structural members, and HENSOMASTIK® K 2000, the flexible fire-protection adhesive.
These products are non-VOC and thus also fulfil the criteria of the LEED credit EQ c4.2. The emission certificates of these products in accordance with ISO 16000 and the AgBB evaluation scheme earn architects and planners so-called ‘credit points’ for the assessment of the environmental standard of a building according to BREEAM and for the award of the German Sustainable Building Certificate (DGNB). Under the French system of emission certificates according to DEVL1101903D and DEVL1104875A, all products were also classified as emission class A+ (very low emissions).
